USA “CHANGING OUR MINDSET” Brian Cecil , the Plant Manager of Nilit America (NIA): the One Nilit process constitutes an opportunity to accelerate positive changes by utilizing global know-how and resources. Most of the employees at Nilit have colleagues who are performing similar roles at other sites.The possibility of communicating with them and understanding the information being used in order to resolve similar problems offers a significant advantage in resolving local problems, while saving time and money.The key to implementation is our ability to identify the need for change in the company and then support it. Markets around the world are demanding products with higher value, and we must respond to these demands. This past year, one enormous change at Nilit has been the focus on fiber manufacturing and on expanding service to this field. At Nilit America, we identified a need to support Nilit’s continued leadership as a nylon fiber supplier. We have suitable facilities, dedicated professional teams and a training team that will lead us to a new level of success. Much of our success will be attainable by changing our mindset. Every day, each of us makes a myriad of decisions that affect how we are perceived in the market, and the right mindset will ensure that we achieve our objectives. One example at Nilit America is shift dialogue meetings, during which we review the key indicators relating to safety, quality and efficiency. In order for us to achieve our objectives, we must first of all understand what the objectives and targets represent and what we need to do, as part of the team, in order to have an impact on them. Recently, we began dealing with machine changeovers by analyzing external and internal change actions. Part of the process involves Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED), applying a methodology being assimilated through the McKinsey firm.The challenge is being able to shatter the belief that there is only one way to perform a machine changeover in manufacturing. The outcome was an approach reminiscent of the support team in motor sports, whose role it is to improve safety, minimize exertion and accelerate the speed at which we can complete the changeover.We succeeded in shortening setup times dramatically, and we intend to implement similar changes in various other departments in the plant.
