Creativity where it matters Working together R&D’s role doesn’t end when the development stage of a new product is complete. The unit helps a lot in the transition processes from the development stage to the production stage. David Lustig, currently the Israel and Ireland Division Manager (formerly the Manager of the OSD Plant and the manager of various departments in the plant), explains: “It’s nice to see how a researcher at R&D that comes with a lot of knowledge about the specific product he has been responsible for since day 1, manages to be open and listen to the production people, who are experienced in manufacturing numerous products that are similar to his. What’s important here is the shared goal of both units, who put all their differences aside. A doctor from R&D works together with an employee from the production floor in complete cooperation, and both look at everything with a professional perspective”. The challenge: globalization In the past, the world was simpler and most of the products that were developed at the R&D unit in Kfar Saba were also manufactured at the plant. This was a “one stop shop”. The people involved knew each other personally and communication was simpler. In recent years the plant has been coping with a new challenge - the product of globalization and “blurring” the boundaries between countries, with everything pertaining to the R&D units and the production sites. A situation was created where the site receives numerous new products from various R&D units that are spread all over the world and there is a need to create and establish flowing communication with all the R&D units, to enable a smoother transition to the production process. One of the main goals that the T&SA Department sets for itself is constant maintenance and improved cooperation with R&D, both in Israel and worldwide. The department is in fact a gateway to the plant for everything pertaining to new R&D products, where each new product that enters the plant passes through it - whether via partnership in developing the product together with R&D, or via implementing the product on a commercial scale and conducting pre-launch process validation. The plant is currently working in full cooperation with several R&D units in Israel and worldwide, including the Innovative R&D units in Israel and the U.S., and the generic R&D units in Israel, Croatia, Netherlands, and Hungary. The world has become a small place, but the challenges... have grown. “ We groomed creative researchers who were very keen to think big. This wasn’t the case with competitor companies, and we created a work method where a researcher sees a project through from its inception to the end - and in fact there’s no end as long as the drug is manufactured “ [Dr. Miki Zaife] David Lustig, Israel and Ireland Division Manager 39
